President Bronislaw Komorowski and German counterpart Joachim Gauck attended observances marking the 25th anniversary of the peaceful revolution in Leipzig on Thursday.

The Polish president's visit to Germany was part of a series of events inaugurated in Warsaw on June 4 to mark the 25th anniversary of democratic transformations in Central and Eastern Europe. Also attending were the presidents of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman, Slovakia - Andrej Kiska and Hungary -  Janos Ader.

Bronislaw Komorowski told reporters in Leipzig that all the state heads had agreed earlier to jointly celebrate the anniversary, which marked the regaining of freedom by "countries which found themselves on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain". In this context he reminded that the freedom movement in central-east Europe began with Poland's Solidarity Union.

"This is our justified (cause for - PAP) national pride and our political capital (...) in the world of free nations", the Polish president said.

The Polish president also attended official celebrations at the Gewandhaus concert hall and a gala luncheon given by the German head of state.

In the evening Presidents Komorowski and Gauck as well as the presidents of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany attended Leipzig's Festival of Lights marking the 25th anniversary of the peaceful revolution.

On June 16 the four presidents met in Budapest during observances marking the 25th anniversary of the reburial of Hungarian PM Imre Nagy and other leaders executed in 1956. In November they will visit Prague and Bratislava on the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution.

Twenty-five years ago, on October 9, 1989, after prayers for peace in St. Nicholas Church and three other Leipzig churches, about 70,000 people gathered with candles in their hands to demonstrate for more freedom in the German Democratic Republic. This peaceful demonstration was an important step on the road to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German reunification.(PAP)
