Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and his Czech, Hungarian and Slovak counterparts, representing countries that together make up the Visegrad Group of States (V4), on Sunday marked the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in then Czechoslovakia.

The main ceremonies marking Czechoslovakia's peaceful overthrow of communism 25 years ago were held in Bratislava and also attended by German President Joachim Gauck. Before the official part, the V4 heads of state met with Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko.

Bronislaw Komorowski said that the 25 years since the onset of the democratic transformation in Central and Eastern Europe provided a good view on "great achievements, also made by Slovakia, on the way through freedom."

The Polish president was accompanied by oppositionists from the times of communist Poland who were involved in contacts with Czechoslovakia's opposition.

The Polish president expressed support for the idea of regular meetings between the V4 and Ukraine. "The Visegrad Group, which proved to be efficient when we were making efforts to enter the group of free states, the EU and NATO, has also its tasks today. Its role is to raise issues that are important for the whole EU and our region. The future of Ukraine is one of them."

Regular meetings of V4 and Ukraine could help streamline relations between V4, Ukraine and other countries in the region, according to Komorowski.

It is important to maintain unity and solidarity of the Visegrad Group, as it is an element of the unity of the EU and the whole West in the face of the Russia-Ukraine crisis, according to the Polish president. (PAP)
