Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski together with some 100 former prisoners of German Nazi death camps on Tuesday morning laid a wreath at the Execution Wall in the former Auschwitz I complex on the 70th anniversary of the concentration camp's liberation.

The wreath-laying ceremony inaugurated the commemoration of the Auschwitz Nazi German death camp's liberation by the Red Army on January 27, 1945.

The main anniversary ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the main gate of the Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp site. Officials from 49 countries and 300 former prisoners will attend.

January 27 is observed around the world as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The Auschwitz concentration camp was established in 1940, its second section Birkenau two years later. The main site of the Jewish Holocaust, Auschwitz consisted of a main camp and 40 sub-units, where the Nazis killed over 1.1 million people, mainly Jews, Poles, Roma and Soviet POWs.
In 1947 the camp site was turned into a museum and in 1979 it was put on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In 2013 1.33 million people visited the museum. (PAP)
