President Bronislaw Komorowski on Monday officially designated Gen. Marek Tomaszycki as the commander-in-chief of the Polish Armed Forces in time of war.

During the ceremony at the Presidential Palace Bronislaw Komorowski pointed out that this was "an element of implementing a new law that is part of the drive to strengthen Poland's defences as it finds itself - like the whole region - in a situation of increased threat, with a sense of greater instability".

"Behind these decisions is commitment to preparing in times of peace for actual command of the Armed Forces in conditions of a war crisis", the president added.

On April 1 the president signed an amendment to the law on the general defence obligation and other laws, among other things defining "a time of war" and the competence and tasks of the Armed Forces commander.

Under the new law, the designated commander-in-chief takes command in a time of war and is accountable directly to the president who manages the country's defence together with the government. The commander-in-chief assumes command over only those forces that are taking part in a defence operation.

Preparing for his duties, the designated candidate may take part in strategic war games and military exercises, plan the use of the Armed Forces in defending the country and design a war-time command system.

Gen. Tomaszycki was the operational commander of the Polish Armed Forces as of January 1, 2014. (PAP)
