President of the RP meets the participants of the conference "The Riga Initiative - Europe without Divisions"

19-20th March 2003, in Warsaw, the advisers to the presidents and the representatives of 17 governments of the Central, Eastern and Southern Europe met on a conference "The Riga Initiative - Europe without Divisions". The main aim of the conference was to discuss the initiative proposed during the Summit of the Vilnius Group countries in February 2002 by the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Aleksander Kwaśniewski. At the Warsaw Conference there were representatives of Albany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Hungary. The conference stressed the importance and the topicality of Polish President`s proposal. The Riga Initiative aims at consolidating solidarity and cooperation of those countries by building Europe without divisions and by supporting European and Euroatlantic integration processes. The participants underlined the fact, that the Initiative enriches already existing frameworks of cooperation and confirmed the need for establishing even closer interaction between the countries within Euroatlantic structures and those aspiring to them. The participants also declared for undertaking the number of factual programs of cooperation without creating new structures. Moreover, the meaning of mutual support for the process of continuation of socio-economic transformation, creation of democratic civil society as well as market economy was stressed. The meaning of creation and modernization of transport infrastructure was considered particularly important for the economic and social development of countries participating in the Conference. Following the concern about international security, the participants underlined the necessity of strengthening the cooperation in fighting against the international terrorism, organized crime, smuggling and illegal migration. The participants also pointed to the need of organizing further meetings within the Riga Initiative and encouraged an active undertaking of projects proposed by the concerned countries. 20th March 2003, the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Aleksander Kwaśniewski welcomed the participants of the conference in the Presidential Palace.
