An official visit of the President of Israel and Spouse– the second day

30th April 2003, the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Aleksander Kwaśniewski with Spouse and the President of Israel, Mr. Moshe Katsav with Spouse took part in the ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Both Presidents lit vigil lights at Umschlagplatz - the first site on the route. During the walk through the streets where ghetto used to be – Stawki, Lenartowskiego, towards the Monument of Ghetto Heroes Presidents Kwaśniewski and Katsav stopped at: -the monument commemorating Paweł Frenkel and Dawid Apfelbaum from the Jewish Military Society, placed at the location of Bunker – the headquarters of the Jewish Military Organization, -the monument commemorating the suicidal death of Szmul Zygelbojm, and paid the homage to the participants of the uprising. After arriving at the Monument of Ghetto Heroes Presidents of Poland and Israel took part in the ceremony together with delegations from both countries, young participants of the March of Living, delegation of the remaining participants of the uprising, delegation of Jewish societies and numerous people from Warsaw. Having listened to the prayers conducted by rabbis and the reading of the roll of the dead Presidents Kwaśniewski and Katsav laid wreaths at the Monument of Ghetto Heroes. The last site on the route was the stone-monument commemorating the “Żegota” Organization, where both presidents laid flowers. In the evening Presidents Kwaśniewski and Katsav togethet with Spouses took part in the concert in a commemoration of the participants of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. President Kwaśniewski decorated Pnina Grynszpan, Masza Putermilch, Simsza Rotem and Boruch Szpigl with the state distinctions for the courage and bravery during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising fights and promoted them to the rank of Polish Army first degree officers.
