Participation of the President of the Republic of Poland in the third Ukrainian Round Table meeting

On 6 December 2004, the President of the Republic of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, went on a visit to Kiev, where-following mediation talks in the afternoon-he took part in the third Ukrainian ‘Round Table’ meeting in the evening.

Like the negotiations on 26 November and 1 December, the meeting involved: the outgoing Ukrainian president, Leonid Kuchma, the presidential candidates: Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovych, speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Vlodymyr Lytvyn, the Polish and Lithuanian presidents: Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Valdas Adamkus, head of EU diplomacy Javier Solana, speaker of Russia’s State Duma Boris Gryzlov and OSCE Secretary-General Jan Kubisz.

Summing up several-hour-long talks, the Polish President said, among other things:
We have reached a point where the problems are already well defined, but differences of opinion are vast indeed... We have managed to implement the minimum programme, which in my opinion is important and needed.
