Press statement of the Chancellery of the President of Poland

On November the 30th, 2004 the President of the Republic of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski continued telephone talks concerning the political crisis in Ukraine. These included the conversations with: US President G.W.Bush, President of France J.Chirac, Dutch Prime Minister J.P Balkenende, Federal Chancellor of Germany G.Schröder, UE’s High Representative for CFSP J.Solana, President of Lithuania V.Adamkus, President of Czech Republic V.Klaus, President of Ukraine L.Kuczma and Ukrainian opposition leader W.Yushchenko. The leaders from EU countries and United States congratulated Poland on its activities aimed at resolving the crisis. They have reiterated their full support for the mediation efforts undertaken by the President of Poland. The President of Poland and his counterparts have exchanged views and opinions on the situation in Ukraine, consequently emphasizing the necessity to sustain territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. In the opinion of the President of Poland, the crucial condition for solving the crisis is to withhold from using force by all parties. Inevitable to achieve a compromise is also the determination and readiness of all sides of the conflict to observe the Ukrainian law and to continue the political dialogue. In consequence of the talks and consultations it has been agreed that on the 1st of December an international mediatory group should arrive in Kiev. It will include President of Poland A.Kwasniewski, President of Lithuania V.Adamkus, EU’s High Representative for CFSP J.Solana and Chairman of the Council of Europe`s Committee of Ministers Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz. The goal of the international envoys is to continue the talks with all parties about the possibilities to overcome the crisis.
