For the sake of remembrance

On June 28, 2006, after the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Poznań June ’56, a press conference was staged which was attended by President Lech Kaczyński, President of the Czech Republic, Václav Klaus, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Horst Köhler, President of the Republic of Slovakia, Ivan Gašparovič and President of the Republic of Hungary, László Sólyoma.

The President of the Republic of Poland said:

"The Poznań celebrations are an element of restoring our remembrance about the struggle with the totalitarian system and the nature of that system. That struggle was waged in our country, but not only here. Apart from Poland, and apart from Poznań, there was East Berlin, there was Czechoslovakia of 1968 and, first and foremost, a tragedy of the Hungarian rising in the autumn of 1956. There were also many other events whose memory we celebrate today. I would like to take this opportunity and thank the authorities of Poznań for such exquisite preparation of this event. Although the President’s Chancellery was also involved, but the authorities of Poznań deserve sincere appreciation – which two words, the authorities and appreciation happen to rhyme in Polish – and I would like to thank them.”
