Poland enjoys excellent relations with Lithuania

On July 13, 2006 Under-Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the President of Poland, Andrzej Krawczyk in his interview for the Polish Press Agency commented on the news of the Lithuanian “Lietuvos Rytas” daily in reference to the relations between Poland and Lithuania.

Here is the text of the wire:

Under-Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the President of Poland denies the news of the Lithuanian “Lietuvos Rytas” daily which reports that the visit of the new Prime Minister of Lithuania, Gediminas Kirkilas, to Warsaw may not resemble friendly meetings held so far. Minister Krawczyk emphasized that Poland enjoys excellent relations with Lithuania.

The first foreign visit of the new Prime Minister of Lithuania, Gediminas Kirkilas, is scheduled for Warsaw. “It may be a difficult visit, not resembling friendly meetings held so far” reported on Thursday the Lithuanian “Lietuvos Rytas” daily.

“We are very happy and we are honored that the new Prime Minister has chosen Poland for his first foreign visit” – minister Krawczyk told PAP on Thursday. “Polish-Lithuanian contacts are very good.” – he pointed out.

While evaluating recent changes in Polish authorities, “Lietuvos Rytas” speculates that “the relations between Lithuania and Poland may soon become the biggest problem for Lithuanian diplomacy”.

“Poland which is said to be a strategic Lithuanian partner may soon cause problems not only to Europe but to our country as well. This is the conclusion we can draw when we observe how Polish authorities tend to change the standards of the whole democratic world and unpredictable behavior of the brothers Kaczyński.” - says the top Lithuanian daily.

The Lithuanian newspaper comes back to a defamatory article offending the brothers Kaczyński, which was published in “Tageszeitung” and then a decision of the President of Poland to call off the meeting with the Chancellor of Germany and the President of France. It also mentions a letter of the former ministers of foreign affairs who described the cancellation of the visit as a serious mistake. According to the Lithuanian daily “such situation in case of our strategic partner is not a good prediction for us for the future.”

Minister Krawczyk emphasized that the article in the Lithuanian daily was received with “astonishment”.

“In my opinion this article is a misunderstanding” – he said. According to Krawczyk, the interpretation of the events in Poland attempted by the newspaper is groundless and unjustifiable.

“We strongly believe that the Polish-Lithuanian relations are excellent, there are many contacts on different levels which prove that both countries enjoy very good relations” emphasized the presidential minister. He also added that the Presidents of Poland and Lithuania are “on very good terms”

Additionally minister Krawczyk put emphasis on the fact that there is no connection between the Polish – German and Polish – Lithuanian relations.

The head of the press office of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ramunas Maczius, told PAP that the ministry was not going to comment on the article in “Lietuvos Rytas”, mainly due to the fact that at present Lithuanian government and ministerial authorities are being changed.
