President of RP visits Georgia

On 19 January, 2008, afternoon President of the Republic of Poland Mr Lech Kaczyński and Mrs Kaczynska went on a visit to Georgia.

On 20 January, the President of RP took part in a ceremony of swearing in of President Elect Mikheil Saakashvili.

At the press conference the President of RP said the following:

“First and foremost, let me express our gratification at the very warm welcome accorded to us here. I am happy to see that the crisis in Georgia is over, the elections were held, and the OSCE issued a positive assessment thereof. Obviously, the opposition has some doubts and I will be soon meeting representatives of the Georgian opposition but this is so to say a normal phenomenon.

I am very pleased that the man who has become President of Georgia is our friend. Poland is vividly interested in Georgia and I am confident that this interest will continue. Without abusing the word that is often overused, one can say that our relations are strategic. Poland supports Georgia on her way to NATO and the European Union. And no doubt, we will continue to do so. Next to the talks that I had with President Saakashvili, I also had an opportunity and pleasure of meeting other presidents: Presidents of the Baltic States and the President of Romania. As usual, we had a separate discussion with President Adamkus and a long discussion with President Ilves. Both conversations were extremely interesting and both will be continued. I will be meeting President Adamkus shortly and President Ilves also in a not distant future. This is the matter of the nearest weeks, as I think. The President of Latvia will be visiting Poland, and I will visit his country in a fortnight or so. I will be meeting all Heads of Baltic States very soon and indeed, there is a lot to discuss. Undoubtedly, our today’s talks also reflected some concerns of these states but this is not the right place to discuss the subject at length, I will relay the issue to the appropriate persons in our country.”

During the meeting with representatives of Georgian media, President Lech Kaczynski made the following remarks:

„I am very happy to be here today with you. I am also happy that the elections were held. I told Mr President that my bet was he would win with 55% votes. This is not an abstract assurance since many leading European politicians asked me about his chances, also during the Lisbon summit. I said back then that the result would be not like a landslide at the time of your revolution but rather like some 55% of votes. I was wrong since the results stand at 53.7%. However, you count votes in a different way. If they were counted the way it is done In Europe, the result would be more like 56%. Georgia, my great liking for the country notwithstanding, will have to further consolidate her democracy. I think that the conduct of parliamentary elections will be yet another proof of such consolidation. Poland will be following them with great care and attention. But our very friendly relations will continue as they are. Poland supports Georgia in her NATO aspirations and in her EU aspirations. Let me reiterate this most emphatically: we do support these aspirations. This is equally necessary for Europe, Georgia and obviously also for my country.”

In the evening, the Presidential Couple attended a gala concert at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet and then a dinner hosted on the occasion of the inauguration of the President of Georgia.
