We have special relations with Israel

On 25 June 2008, in a ceremony in the Presidential Palace Mr Samuel Pohoryles received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in recognition of meritorious services in promoting Polish-Israeli cooperation.

The ceremony was attended among others by: Mr Zvi Rav-Ner, Director of Central Europe Department of the MFA of the State of Israel, H.E. David Peleg – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Israel to Poland, and Mr Włodzimierz Tomaszewski – Deputy Mayor of Lodz.

At the ceremony, President Lech Kaczyński noted the following:

”Our relations with the State of Israel are special relations. Throughout my Presidency I have been trying to emphasise the fact. The State of Israel is the only state in the world save for Poland and probably Western Ukraine and Lithuania where it is still easy to find persons with the command of our language. That being said, it must be remembered that our relations with the State of Israel have not always been easy. The ones who worked hard to make them possibly best deserve special appreciation. I do believe that we have already half-way down this road and Professor Samuel Pohoryles’ services in this regard are unique. And this is the reason for my decision. May I offer to you, Professor, my warmest congratulations on this achievement and reiterate once again: we have covered a long way in the last decade or so. I believe that we were proceeding more quickly these last two and a half years. This is not yet the end of this road but halfway through. This is also to your great credit, Professor, and I wish to thank you very much for that.”
