President: I am glad that India is strengthening its cooperation with the EU
From 23 to 26 April 2009, the President of the Republic of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, will be paying an official state visit to Poland.
Lech Kaczyński emphasized that this visit is very important from the point of view of Polish foreign policy and the relations between Poland and the rest of the world.
“India is one of the largest countries in the world. On the one hand, the country has a history of thousands of years and, on the other, it develops faster and faster with every year, its importance in the world is continually increasing. This makes the visit by Madam President to our country even more important,” he said.
The President also said that his talks with the President of India concerned the relations between India and Afghanistan, Pakistan and China, as well as the attitude of Poland with regard to important European issues, such as the Lisbon Treaty and matters connected with the expansion of NATO.
Lech Kaczyński also emphasized that he is very glad that India is making immense efforts to help Afghanistan and that the relations between India and the European Union are becoming closer and closer.
He also pointed out that energetic efforts of the Indian government have already produced effects and that the economic recession in this country will most probably end within this year. “This confirms that, if action is taken, positive results can be achieved,” the President said.
During their talks, the two presidents also signed two agreements – one with regard to cooperation in the field of tourism and one concerning health care. The President emphasized that it is possible to significantly increase trade and economic exchange between Poland and India.
He added that talks will be continued during the supper which the President will give in honour of the guests.
In her statement, the President of India confirmed that the main objective of her visit is to intensify relations between the two countries. “During the talks that took place today we reached an agreement with regard to matters connected with cooperation in several fields, including information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutics, health care, tourism, as well as current issues related to defences, mining, education and culture,” Pratibha Devisingh Patil said.
She also emphasized that India appreciates the achievements of Poland, especially after Poland joined the EU. “India and Poland cooperate in international arenas, including UN,” she added. She remarked that both countries have also experienced the death of their citizens at the hands of terrorists. At the same time, she offered her condolences because of the murder of Piotr Stańczak, the Polish engineer who was abducted in Pakistan.
