President Andrzej Duda on Tuesday evening accepted the cabinet resignation from Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki after the new parliament convened for the first time for a four-year term, earlier in the day.

The president accepted the prime minister's resignation and at the same time asked Morawiecki to continue in the role until the new government is appointed.

According to the constitution, the president has 14 days after accepting the resignation to appoint a new cabinet.

At a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace, PM Morawiecki said that his government had managed to achieve quite a lot during a relatively short time.

Morawiecki thanked his ministers, his predecessor, Beata Szydlo, and President Duda.

"It was also a great pleasure, I had the opportunity to learn a lot as well," the prime minister added.

Accepting the resignation, the president praised the government's track record, mentioning its successful welfare programmes and the good condition of public finance and the country's economy.

Andrzej Duda expressed hope that the next government will continue the previous cabinet's policies.

"The programme that has been pursued for the past four years will continue to be implemented. I'm still hopeful about it and I must admit it has been a good programme," the president said.
