President Bronisław Komorowski meets Sergey Lavrov

President Bronisław Komorowski and Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation

President Bronisław Komorowski met Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, at the Presidential Palace during his visit to Poland.

Sergey Lavrov’s visit was connected with the 6th session of the Committee for Polish-Russian Cooperation Strategy, organised under the chairmanship of the Polish and Russian Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

Lavrov thanked Komorowski for his invitation to the Palace, and emphasized that the President of Russia wishes to enhance the strategic relations and partnership with Poland. In answer to Komorowski's question, Lavrov stated that Russia is cooperative as far as the report of Russian MAK (interstate aviation committee) and the investigation regarding the Smolensk crash are concerned.

Komorowski pointed out that cooperation is very important in this case. He thanked Russia for its help in organising a pilgrimage of the families of the crash victims to Smolensk and Katyń on 10th October and the participation of the Russian First Lady in the pilgrimage. He added that the process of Russian-Polish reconciliation has already begun and that it would help if the Katyń documents were fully disclosed and all case files were transferred to the Polish side. Komorowski was pleased with the visit of the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Poland and hopes that bilateral relations will continue to develop.

Both sides remarked that interaction between citizens is important, including youth exchanges between Russia and Poland. They were happy to see that there were increasing numbers of projects of this type. During the meeting, they also discussed issues connected with economic cooperation and introducing the Local Border Traffic zone at the border between Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast.
