First Lady starts visit to Japan

First Lady Anna Komorowska delivered a lecture on Janusz Korczak, a Polish-Jewish author and educator, at Josai University in Tokyo, at the start of her five-day visit to Japan on Thursday.

In her speech Ms Komorowska praised the Josai University as a "prestigious, dynamic institution of higher learning, cooperating with 70 universities worldwide." She said she was glad that Japan shows growing interest in central European countries.

Poland's first lady spoke about the life and work of Janusz Korczak who is considered to be the author of children's rights. "His achievements - revolutionary not only during his lifetime - inspire people all over the world."

Korczak was a man of a great heart who devoted his life to orphaned children in a difficult situation. Korczak refused to leave the ghetto and accompanied orphanage children to the Treblinka death camp. "Korczak's life and death is a testimony that leaves no one indifferent."

On Friday Poland's First Lady will be received at an audience with Empress Michiko and in the evening she will attend a charity ball promoting Poland. (PAP)
