Polish, German presidents on freedom at Woodstock Festival

Polish and German Presidents, Bronisław Komorowski and Joachim Gauck Thursday at the opening of Poland's 18th Przystanek Woodstock rock festival in Kostrzyn/Oder spoke about the pursuit of freedom. Joachim Gauck voiced admiration for the Poles as a freedom-loving people.

Addressing the festival public Bronisław Komorowski said the visit to the Woodstock festival was a joint idea with Joachim Gauck, its aim "to meet with Polish and German youth in a place where they are most numerously represented".

Joachim Gauck called Poland "the motherland of freedom" and said he admired the Poles for their love of freedom.

"As a German I admire the Poles most for their love of freedom. Not only during the war, but also under communism.", the German state head said.

Bronisław Komorowski noted that no nation was safe if it resigned its freedom. "Today we are a free people and a free country but we are in good relations with our German neighbours and a part of integrating Europe", he said.

Both presidents also praised Woodstock organiser Jurek Owsiak, also known for his Grand Christmas Aid Orchestra charity actions. Joachim Gauck and Bronisław Komorowski also noted that the festival, located on the German-Polish border, was proof of the progressing reconcilement between both peoples.

Earlier today Joachim Gauck and Bronislaw Komorowski met for face to face talks in Kustrin-Kietz on the German bank of the Oder. (PAP)
