President in Belgium on Ukraine

Ukraine is getting ready for cooperation with the Western World, Polish President Bronisław Komorowski said in Belgium on Wednesday. Activity on the part of both the EU and Ukraine is needed in order to make this convergence come true, according to Bronisław Komorowski. Wednesday was the second and final day of Bronislaw Komorowski's visit to Belgium.

Despite its current problems, the EU is still an attractive project for the world and it still has much to share with its neighbours, according to the Polish president. Poland wants the Union to strongly consider opening up to the neighbouring countries, Komorowski said.

"We, Poles have a special attitude towards Ukraine as a great country, a great nation which is getting ready for convergence, for cooperation with the Western World," the president said.

This needs a two-sided activity, Bronisław Komorowski added. On the one hand particular EU members must advocate for ratifying the EU-Ukraine association agreements. On the other hand, there is a need for a parallel process of "following the agreed road map related to the necessary changes that would reform the Ukrainian judicial system."

"We should think together whether starting these two parallel processes is possible," Komorowski told reporters.

The president said that he would promote this way of thinking both in the EU and Ukraine. He added that during his visit to Belgium he discussed the Ukrainian issue with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and Belgian PM Elio Di Rupo. (PAP)
