  |   President Bronislaw Komorowski in Zagreb President Bronislaw Komorowski in Zagreb

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, in Zagreb on Monday, said he counted on good cooperation with Croatia inside the EU. He stressed that Poland hopes for Croatia's support on such issues as Ukraine. Croatia will joint the EU on July 1.

Bronislaw Komorowski started a two-day official visit to Croatia on Monday.

Addressing a joint press conference, held together with Croatian President Ivo Josipovic, Bronislaw Komorowski stressed that he came to Zagreb in a very important moment for the European Union. "We are very satisfied that we were able to assist in this process... and that the signing of the accession agreement (between the EU and Croatia) took place during the Polish presidency of the EU."

The Polish president added that his visit to Croatia is a "sign of hope that we will be able to continue, or even improve good cooperation and good relations and friendship between the two countries and peoples" at the EU level.

Bronislaw Komorowski said he is counting on Croatia's support in further deepening of the European integration process, including the association agreement with Ukraine planned to be signed during the November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius.

"Just as we accept, understand and try to participate in the deepening of the European integration process in the region of former Yugoslavia...we expect full understanding and acceptance for issues raised by Poland - the maintaining of openness of the EU towards countries...that are embraced by the Eastern Partnership process. I am thinking of Moldova and especially of Ukraine," said the president.

Bronislaw Komorowski thanked Ivo Josipovic for understanding Ukraine's situation as a "problem of geostrategic importance, vital for the enlargement of an area of commonly understood democracy and free markets outside the EU."

President Komorowski stressing that Poland counts on broader economic relations with Croatia appealed to Polish and Croatian entrepreneurs to expand their businesses in each others countries.

Croatian President Josipovic thanked Poland for its support for his country's EU membership efforts adding that "Polish efforts and manifested friendship were of great significance."

According to him, by inaugurating the EU Eastern Partnership initiative Poland "gave an excellent example of how to develop cooperation with potential future members and candidate countries to the European Union," including Ukraine and Moldova.

Ivo Josipovic said that the policy of further enlargement of the European Union is a strategic goal for the Croatian authorities.

The Croatian president expressed hope that his country's EU membership will be an opportunity to deepen Polish-Croatian economic relations. "The Croatian market is open for Polish companies..., said Josipovic.

"I hope that the visit of President Komorowski will be an important catalyst for future bilateral cooperation and future cooperation within the European Union," said the president of Croatia.

Apart from Monday talks with Josipovic, Bronislaw Komorowski took part in the opening of a seminar „EU Funds - Opportunities and Challenges".

On Tuesday, President Komorowski will meet with Chairman of the Croatian Sabor (parliament) Josip Leko and together with President Josipovic will open an economic forum during which the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency and the Croatian Agency of Investments and Competitiveness will sign an agreement.
