President signs decision on sending Polish troops in Central African Republic

President Bronislaw Komorowski on Wednesday signed a decision on sending a Polish Military Contingent to the Central African Republic (CAR) to support forces of the French Republic, the National Security Bureau reported.

The decision concerns 50 soldiers and army employees, one transport plane with necessary equipment from February 1 to April 30, 2014.

The mission is implemented on the basis of a resolution of the UN Security Council and a law on principles of the use and deployment of the Polish Armed Forces abroad. It will be a successive mission of Polish soldiers in Africa after operations in Chad, Congo and Mali and the second in CAR.

The mission aims to back International Support Mission in the Central African Leadership (MISCA) via protecting civilians, restoring public order and the stability of the country via the restoration of the state authorities, creating conditions for providing humanitarian assistance, supporting disarmament of armed groupings and international efforts for the transformation of the security sector in CAR.

On Thursday Poland will bid farewell to the Polish contingent leaving for France. Polish pilots will support French troops in their operation in CAR, Lt. Colonel Artur Golawski from the General Direction of Armed Forces said Wednesday.

The Polish contingent, to be fully operative on February 1, will operate from the French air base in Orlean, 105 km south-west off Paris. (PAP)
