President hopes for stability in Ukraine after elections

President Bronisław Komorowski

The elections will give legitimacy to the new authorities and bring stability, President Bronislaw Komorowski said Friday. The new president will have to build unity and unite the badly divided country, he added.
"We wish Ukraine to take the Polish road" in making good use of independence, Bronislaw Komorowski said at a press conference in Warsaw. "Today we know that it is a good road. We would like the presidential elections there to be the first step in continuation of the process of bringing Ukraine closer to the western world, i.e. the European Union."
Bronislaw Komorowski hoped that the elections would "demonstrate that people who want to obstruct stabilisation in Ukraine are not many, also in its eastern regions. And that they are not accepted by an overwhelming majority of Ukrainians who want stability, peace, security and normal development."
The next Ukrainian president should "show acceptance and understanding for symptoms of diversity resulting from history and culture" of eastern Ukraine, Komorowski said. "He should do so without provoking divisions in the state or its weakening."
The outcome of Sunday elections "will help extinguish the internal conflict in Ukraine," Komorowski predicted.(PAP)
