"Poroshenko's pro-European determination important"

New Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's determination to seal an EU association agreement as soon as possible was an important part of his inaugural address, President Bronislaw Komorowski said Saturday in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

Bronislaw Komorowski, in Kiev for Poroshenko's swearing-in, told reporters that Poland fully supported Ukraine's European ambitions and considered the present time "the best (...) moment for Ukraine to anchor itself in the western system".

Bronislaw Komorowski reminded that owing to Ukraine's strained economic situation the agreement's implementation would have to proceed "with consideration for the Ukrainian side's expectations as to the pace of introducing individual regulations".

In the Polish president's opinion Poroshenko's main task now was to stabilise the situation in east Ukraine. In this context Komorowski mentioned the Ukrainian leader's plan to seal a ceasefire or truce and voiced hope that such a decision "does not prove one-sided and respected solely by the Ukrainian state".

Bronislaw Komorowski opined that the key to further reforms in Ukraine were constitutional changes, which he suggested should be put through quickly. He especially stressed the importance of amending the constitution in connection with Ukraine's planned local government reforms.

"Without changes in the constitution (the local government reform - PAP) will be very difficult or outright impossible", he said.

In Kiev Bronislaw Komorowski also laid a wreath at a cross commemorating the victims of recent protests in Kiev which ousted former state head Viktor Yanukovych.
